Signs You Need a Periodontal Exam

Gum disease can be easy to ignore in its earliest stage (gingivitis) but waiting until you have advanced periodontitis (the fourth and most severe stage), means irreversible damage has already been done. You should see a periodontist for a consultation if you have any of the following symptoms of gum disease:

  • Red, swollen, tender, or bleeding gums

  • Bad breath or bad taste that won’t go away

  • Painful chewing

  • Sensitive or loose teeth

  • Gum recession or space between your gums and teeth

  • Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite

  • Any change in the fit of partial dentures

Periodontal Disease is more common than you Think

Gingivitis (gum inflammation) can be controlled and treated with good oral hygiene and regular professional cleaning. Periodontitis (gum disease) can also be treated successfully but may require more extensive treatment. Such treatment might include deep cleaning of the tooth root surfaces below the gums, medications prescribed to take by mouth or placed directly under the gums, and sometimes corrective surgery.

Untreated gum disease leads to gum recession and damage to tooth structure. This can occur slowly or quickly depending on the severity, type of bacteria prevalent, and other personal factors. In any case, gum disease eventually leads to irreversible loss of gum tissue, bone, and teeth.
