An effective oral hygiene routine includes brushing your teeth each morning and night as well as remembering to floss once per day. With consistent practice and quality oral care products, these simple measures will remove bacterial deposits from your mouth before they can contribute to oral health problems.

If you are inconsistent with your daily routine, plaque and food particles that remain in your mouth can gradually harden into tartar near your gumline. As the bacterial substance accumulates it can put you at increased risk of suffering from periodontal disease.

Our doctor notes that your flossing technique can also factor in the overall effectiveness of your daily routine.

When flossing you should start by spooling the excess strand around your fingers. You can then grip the dental floss firmly between your thumb and index fingers before carefully inserting it between two teeth. Curving the strand slightly will help maximize physical contact with the tooth.

It might take several sweeps along the length of each tooth to clear away food particles and plaque. Make sure to also floss into the gumline as well as the space behind each of your rear molars.
